Optimization of Mechanical Reservoir Circulation at Mangatangi Dam, New Zealand
eCoast investigated the optimization of dam water aeration/circulation through the application of hydrodynamic numerical modelling at Mangatangi Dam.

WaterCare Services Ltd commissioned eCoast to investigate the optimization of dam water aeration/circulation through the application of hydrodynamic numerical modelling at Mangatangi Dam. The main objective of the study was to determine how increasing dissolved oxygen (DO) levels via spargeline dam aeration can be optimized through apparatus location and interaction with the natural circulation of dam water. Specifically this was undertaken by reviewing the current aeration strategy for Mangatangi dam, considering the orientation of the lake and any impacts of prevailing winds on aeration and location of aeration lines, and accounting for the stagnant lake arms and what their impact is on cyanobacteria/water quality within the lake.
