New Zealand Coastal Society Conference 2025: Navigating Change – Charting a Course for Our Coastal Future
The eCoast team was proud to be part of NZCS 2025 in Napier, sponsoring the Gala Dinner and celebrating this year’s Sustainability Award recipient. We also shared our coastal resilience work and connected with others dedicated to protecting and strengthening Aotearoa’s coasts.

eCoast at the New Zealand Ocean Conference 2025
At the New Zealand Coastal Society 2025 in Napier last week, the eCoast team was proud to sponsor the Gala Dinner and present the NZCS Sustainability Award to Ngā Herenga o Papatūānuku: Establishing a Tangata Whenua Climate Adaptation Network.
Presented by Shari Gallop, this outstanding project exemplifies climate adaptation in action, blending scientific innovation with kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and tangata whenua (Indigenous) leadership. Fun fact: eCoast initiated this Sustainability Award in 2017 to recognise and encourage leadership and innovation in coastal sustainability—so it was wonderful to see such a deserving initiative honoured this year.

A Conference Focused on Navigating Change
The conference brought together engineers, scientists, planners, consultants, and researchers from across Aotearoa—all committed to building resilient coasts and sustainably managing our marine environments. This year’s theme, “Navigating Change: Charting a Course for Our Coastal Future,” resonated strongly with eCoast’s mission. We were thrilled to share insights, reconnect with the coastal community, and support initiatives that strengthen coastal ecosystems and the people who depend on them.
Exploring Coastal Challenges and Opportunities
This year’s NZCS programme showcased a wide range of current coastal issues—from storm impacts and sediment dynamics to community-led adaptation and policy innovation. Field trips, workshops, and panel discussions offered valuable opportunities to explore how climate change, development pressures, and evolving environmental expectations are shaping the future of Aotearoa’s coastlines. It was inspiring to see such collective energy directed toward practical, science-based solutions that benefit both people and ecosystems.

Showcasing eCoast’s Recent Work
The eCoast team also showcased recent projects, highlighting our commitment to applied science and real-world solutions:

A big thank you to intern Eva Smits for volunteering and representing eCoast at NZCS 2025! We look forward to continuing our work to build resilient coastal communities and sustainable marine environments.
Let’s keep charting a course toward a more resilient and sustainable coastal future.
