eCoast at the Save The Waves Coalition Summit 2025
eCoast staff members João Castro and Ed Atkin, along with Susie Crick and Doug Lees from Manly Surf Reserve, attended the Save The Waves Coalition summit in Santa Cruz, California.
The event brought together all World Surfing Reserves, leading surf scientists, and global ocean NGOs, providing a unique opportunity for eCoast to connect with the global surf conservation community and share insights on coastal resilience and ecosystem protection. João and Ed’s participation highlighted our commitment to pairing science, policy, and culture to safeguard surf ecosystems worldwide.
Collaborating to Protect Surf Ecosystems
At the summit, eCoast showcased our work on parametric insurance programs designed to protect and endorse surf ecosystems. The World Surf Reserves all showed up with their innovative ideas to help support surf ecosystem management while incentivising long-term conservation practices. João and Ed engaged with representatives from Australian, Portuguese, and European World Surfing Reserves, including Noosa, Gold Coast, Manly, and Ericeira, demonstrating the power of cross-border collaboration.
Bringing the Surf Conservation Community Together
The summit featured inspiring presentations and discussions, including global fundraising tools presented by North Devon World Surfing Reserve and Surfrider Foundation Australia.
João noted his key highlights such as connecting with his mentors from his involvement with the Sustainable Ocean Alliance, gaining insights from Nick Mucha who brought the Patagonia spirit and his book Tools to Save Our Home Planet, and immersing himself in the powerful artwork of Ethan Estess.
