How Web Applications Have the Power to Uncover Hidden Stories

Councils often hold rich datasets but their potential to be analysed, shared and to tell stories is often not taken full advantage of.

Councils often hold rich datasets but their potential to be analysed, shared and to tell stories is often not taken full advantage of. Unlike typical data serving websites, web apps provide the power to easily undertake in-depth data analysis and test ideas with a simple and distributable interface.

eCoast (Dougal Greer), in collaboration with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (James Dare), developed a new app for analysing measured river flow data to explore and better understand how various allocation scenarios affect reliability at management flow and minimum flow and FRE3 events. The app produces summary data and charts showing reliability by year or by month.

The video below shows a quick tour of the features of this app. If you have a dataset gathering dust that you think may hide an interesting story, drop us a line!
