Navigating Coastal Challenges: Insights from the NZ Coastal Society Conference

Last week, eCoast Director, Dougal Greer, represented our team at the New Zealand Coastal Society Conference in Wellington.

Last week, eCoast Director, Dougal Greer, represented our team at the New Zealand Coastal Society Conference in Wellington. Beyond attending, Dougal delivered a compelling presentation on resilience and adaptation, specifically delving into the complexities of understanding coastal hazards in tropical and temperate environments – well done Dougal!

Dougal Greer Presenting at the NZ Coastal Society Conference.

Dougal's presentation tackled the pressing need to reassess global coastal hazards amidst climate change impacts. While recreating 44 years of coastal conditions using wave models, he highlighted the challenges in capturing long-term interactions, especially pronounced in hurricane-prone tropical areas with limited records dating back to 1979.

Introducing an innovative Monte Carlo methodology, Dougal's research generates synthetic data spanning thousands of years. This approach, simulating 10,000 years of diverse weather scenarios, aims to unravel the extended risks of coastal hazards, encompassing both cyclone and non-cyclone conditions. The study's predictions on coastal inundation and erosion offer valuable insights for future risk assessments and mitigation strategies.
