Dave Phillips has an interest in the areas of stormwater infrastructure design, coastal development and engineering, low impact design, water quality and quantity, on-site wastewater, environmental impact assessment, catchment management, flooding, sediment and erosion control, and particularly in the sustainability of the coastal marine area due to the importance this zone has in society. It is the place where people increasingly want to live and play, but continues to come under pressure from development in the catchment, coastal erosion, pollution and sediment run-off to our waterways, which discharges to the coast, and climate change.

He is actively involved in both consulting and research, and is a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPENG) and member of the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand (MIPENZ), as well a past associate member of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors. He is also a member the IPENZ Coastal Technical Group, New Zealand Water, the Special Stormwater Technical Group and Sustainability Society. Since 1986 David has worked across the spectrum in both consulting (e.g. Murray North, Works Consulting Ltd, Opus), local body (e.g. North Shore Drainage Board), tertiary education (Unitec NZ – School of Engineering and the Built Environment), and project management (e.g. ASR Ltd, Morphum Environmental Ltd) in relation to various areas of surveying, construction and civil, environmental and coastal engineering. He has published numerous research papers and technical reports, and supervised a large number of student research projects for industry. Dave Phillips has a passion for surfing and has completed a PhD involving one of the world’s most comprehensive studies of sediment transport/hydrodynamics on a large-scale headland at Raglan, New Zealand.

Recent consulting projects have mostly included infrastructure assessments and design, flood reports, drainage design, on-site wastewater design, detention tank design, low impact design including swales and dispersion trenches, erosion and sediment control plans, catchment assessment, environmental impact assessments and coastal projects.
